Preparing Your Home for Hurricane Season
The 2023 hurricane season is underway, and experts are predicting another year with a high number of named storms. To be prepared for whatever comes your way this season, there are a number of actions you can take now to save yourself time and effort later. Three great places to start are home improvement projects, document gathering, and an insurance coverage checkup.
Home Improvement Projects
- Trim overextended tree branches and cut down any large dead trees.
- Clean out your gutters so that all drainage functions properly.
- Consider installing reinforced doors, windows, roofs, or hurricane shutters. These will go a long way in maintaining the structure of your home.
- Gather the materials necessary to anchor large objects like patio furniture, grills, gazebos, and fountains to avoid them tipping over, getting damaged, or destroying other property in high winds.
- Purchase and make room to safely store necessary items such as generators, gasoline tanks, plywood, tarps, and sandbags. You’ll avoid long lines or items being sold out as a storm approaches.
Important Document Gathering
- Compile all your important documents and centralize them in one location for easy access.
- Passports, financial documents, insurance documentation, notable phone numbers, etc. are all items that should be included.
- Save and hold cash in a safe location for emergency use.
Insurance Coverage Checkup
Ahead of a hurricane and before you have a claim is the best time to check and make sure you have the right insurance coverage in place. When reviewing your policies, consider these questions:
- Have you added any personal assets since you purchased or last renewed your homeowners insurance? Are they covered or do they require a separate insurance policy?
- Do you have flood insurance coverage? Most homeowners insurance policies do not include flood protection, and hurricane coverage has limitations on what is covered.
- Has the value of your home changed? Evaluate your assets to make sure you have the right amount of coverage. Be sure to inquire about discounts as well.
- What is your hurricane deductible? This is the amount you’ll pay before your homeowners insurance kicks in, and it’s typically a percentage of your home’s insured value. Nineteen states currently require a hurricane deductible.
There are many more questions to ask to ensure you have the right protection for your unique needs. To know you’re ready for whatever comes this hurricane season, call an IOA insurance advisor today at 833-5IOAUSA (833-546-2872) for assistance.
