AITA for using gift cards to pay for dinner on my date

In a recent date scenario, a 21-year-old woman (let’s call her “Alex”) took her date, “Eve,” to a local steakhouse in a small town. Alex, who is not wealthy but is careful with her finances, used gift cards received from her job to cover the cost of their meal. These gift cards had been accumulated over time and were intended for a special occasion like this one.

When the check arrived, Alex used the gift cards to pay for the entire dinner. Eve, however, reacted with surprise and concern. She questioned Alex’s choice of payment method, suggesting that using gift cards instead of cash or a credit card felt impersonal and implied that Eve was not worth Alex’s “actual money.” Despite the fact that the meal was covered completely, and Alex had been transparent about her financial situation, Eve’s reaction left Alex worried about appearing cheap.

The restaurant itself was a casual establishment, not a high-end dining spot, and Alex had made sure to tip the waiter in cash. The situation led Alex to question if using gift cards was inappropriate or if it was simply a misunderstanding. As someone who hasn’t been on a date in years, Alex was unsure whether this was a common expectation or if her choice of payment had indeed unintentionally conveyed a negative impression.

Overall, while Alex’s intention was to treat her date to a nice meal with the help of gift cards, the feedback from Eve suggested that the method of payment might have affected the perception of the date’s value.
